About Dave and the
Dave Frank School of Jazz

Dave Frank is one of the busiest solo jazz pianists and music educators on the scene today. Dave has been teaching jazz piano privately seven days a week for 53 years. He is the author of the best-selling Hal Leonard book and video series, Joy of Improv and Breakthrough to Improv, was an Associate Professor of piano at Berklee College of Music in Boston from 1987-2004, is a jazz ambassador to the US State Department, and was a co-founder of the New York School of Jazz (1983-86). Dave Frank currently lives in Peekskill, New York (about an hour north of New York City) and directs the Dave Frank School of Jazz, teaching students worldwide online.  The DFSOJ offers private instruction for aspiring musicians at all levels, as well as frequent concerts/workshops for the general public.

Dave Frank has been the subject of feature articles in the Boston GlobeKeyboard Magazine, and The Chronicle of Higher Learning. Dave’s teachers include the legendary Lennie Tristano and Charlie Banacos, classical concert piano great Irina Lankova, and John Larosa.

free consultation is usually offered upon request for Dave’s online lessons. The consultation is a time to meet with Dave, discuss your musical goals and musical history, and receive a prospective course of study. Lessons are offered to students at all levels, and for all ages 13 and up.


The keyboard curriculum offered at the DFSJ includes all modern musical styles, including all forms of jazz, blues, rock, pop, boogie, keyboard accompaniment, fusion, etc. Lessons in improvisation are also offered to players of all instruments with two or more years of experience playing in any style.
